The third novel by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, Americanha, won one of the most prestigious US literary awards in 2013, the National Book Critics Circle Award, beating Donna Tartt’s Goldfinch.
American is the most ambitious work by time, geography and range of ideas by Adichi. This is a novel about how an educated person of the «second world» feels when he is in the USA or London, about what awaits him at home if he decides to return. As teenagers, Ifemelu and Obinze fell in love, and they did not care about the dictatorship in their home country. But, after graduating from school, the beautiful Ifemelu went to study in America, where a new world awaited her, and the sensible Obinze from a professorial family was going to follow her beloved. But the events of September 11 put an end to his plans to move to America, and he finds himself in London, where he leads the dangerous life of an illegal immigrant. Years go by, and now Obinze is a rich man, lives in his native country, where he is appreciated and respected, and Ifemelu has become a successful journalist. It would seem that both are doing well, but this is just the beginning … Fascinating, bitter, sometimes funny novel, covering three continents and many destinies, recalls Adichi’s previous novel «Half of the Yellow Sun», as well as «And the echo flies through the mountains» by Khaled Hosseini and Stone’s Cut by Abraham Vergese. Probably, the main conversation in this novel is about how the idea of our homeland and home, about the shades of parting and returning, lives and changes in us.
