Lydia Perez owns a small bookstore in the Mexican city of Acapulco, where she lives with her husband Sebastian, a journalist, and eight-year-old son Luca. After the publication in the newspaper of the material prepared by Sebastian, exposing the local drug cartel, the bandits arrange a bloody massacre, in which all the relatives and friends of Lydia — sixteen people — are killed. Miraculously, only she and Luke survived. Realizing that a hunt has been announced for them, the mother and son flee from Acapulco. To save their lives, they head north to the border with the United States. And they soon realize that the nightmare they have experienced is just the beginning: the road to a new life will require truly inhuman efforts from them.
