The most famous ballerina of the last century is Anna Pavlova. As a child, she was considered too thin and awkward, almost no one believed in her success, no one except Anna Pavlova herself. Once with her mother at the ballet at the Mariinsky Theater, the girl literally fell ill with dancing. With dreams of them, she fell asleep and woke up, and knew for sure that she would also dance and certainly better than anyone else. She managed to persuade her mother to send her to a ballet school. Thus began the amazing journey of a girl who once grew up and became the most famous prima ballerina of all time, inspiring legions of dancers after herself: the brave, generous, unusually gifted genius Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. She devoted herself entirely to ballet; there were many rumors and legends about her personal life. And only after her death the veil of secrecy was slightly opened and the world learned about the only love in the life of a ballerina — her husband Victor Dandre.
Even during her lifetime, Anna Pavlova told her husband that he should write a book about her, since no one knows her better than him. And now the desire of the great ballerina has been fulfilled and we have a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the life story of Anna Pavlova from the «first hand», learn about her thoughts, aspirations, disappointments, successes and griefs.
In addition to my personal closeness to Anna Pavlovna, I met with thousands of people in all parts of the world who came to express to Anna Pavlovna their feelings of delight and love. Talking with them, receiving letters from them during Anna Pavlovna’s lifetime, as well as after her death, I could understand deeper than anyone else what an extraordinary light of beauty and love Anna Pavlovna was. From all human sources, I received only confirmation of the correctness of my understanding of this exceptional personality. I will be immensely happy if I manage to present in this book the image of Anna Pavlovna full of that sublime charm for which this woman and artist was so loved. I think it won’t be difficult. To pay tribute to Anna Pavlovna, you need to tell only the truth. V. Dandre
