The Health Party comes to power in Sweden. How much is needed for the people to be imbued with enthusiasm — an ideally moderate political position and, of course, a bright charismatic leader, young, slender, energetic. Changes begin in society, which at first are alarming for a few. Being overweight isn’t good, right? Only now, even a person’s fitness for work is determined by the so-called fat-muscle quota. FMK is higher than the norm set by the government — and if you please, you have nothing to do in the public sector! In schools, instead of regular subjects, children are now taught nutrition and sports, and churches are being converted into fitness centers. The level of absurdity and cruelty is growing every day. Exceptional thinness is elevated to an absolute cult. All those who do not fit into the new norm find themselves outcasts and marginalized, whose civil and human rights are being taken away before our eyes, justifying it with the good of society … And then, one by one, they begin to disappear. Where are they taken? What do they do with them? .. When a young historian named Landon disappears from his girlfriend, he goes in search of her.
Wasp Eriksdotter’s gripping and frighteningly realistic dystopian novel Slaughter tells how easy it is for a person to feel civility, how easy it is to put your body under social control, succumb to the rhetoric of hate and start taking discrimination for granted. How easy it is to wake up one day and find yourself in a totalitarian state, which was built not by anyone, but by yourself …
