Petr Pustota is a commissar, decadent poet and patient of a psychiatric hospital living in two different worlds, in two different eras. His consciousness and feelings are torn between 1919, Moscow in the nineties and virtual space. He cannot fully understand what is really reality and what is just a figment of his playing imagination.
The author himself characterizes the novel «Chapaev and Emptiness» as follows: «This is the first work in world literature, the action of which takes place in absolute emptiness.» In fact, it takes place in 1919 in the Chapaev division, in which the main character, the decadent poet Pyotr Pustot, serves as a commissar. And also today. And also, as always with Pelevin, in the virtual space, where Kawabata, Schwarzenegger, “just Maria” meet with the main character …
According to critics, «Chapaev and Emptiness» is «the first serious Zen Buddhist novel in Russian literature.»
