Svetlana Aleksievich «Chernobyl Prayer: Chronicle of the Future» is the fourth book of the famous fiction-documentary cycle «Voices of Utopia» about the main technological disaster of the 20th from the Nobel Prize laureate in literature.
“Two catastrophes coincided: the space one — Chernobyl, and the social one — a huge socialist continent went under water. And this, the second crash, overshadowed the cosmic one, because it is closer and more understandable to us. What happened in Chernobyl is the first time on earth, and we are the first people to survive it. «
The audiobook was recorded according to the new author’s edition — the book has increased by a third due to the restored fragments excluded from the previous editions for censorship reasons.
In May 2019, the premiere of the mini-series «Chernobyl», created by the American TV channel HBO and dedicated to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, took place. The script for this film is partially based on the book by Svetlana Aleksievich. The series gained widespread worldwide popularity and was nominated in several nominations for various film awards.
The Chernobyl Prayer is an absolutely obligatory and heartbreaking reading. Aleksievich received the Nobel Prize for a reason. I think she managed to approach the tragedy from an unexpected angle — to tell it through the stories of people we would never have known about without her … For her, they are all equal, be they generals, party leaders or peasants — it doesn’t matter. And that inspired me a lot. «

“In this polyphonic work, which is at the same time a tragedy, fantasy, biographical narrative and document, there is no intention to condemn. No! What Svetlana Alekseevich offers us is absolutely pure documentation, which, first of all, obliges us to collectively carry out the work of memory on the human and social consequences of the Chernobyl disaster ”.
