«You will inherit a completely distraught world from us»
The darkest and most different novel of Arthur Haley is a psychological thriller, a detective story and, in a way, an existential manifesto, with which the author (as it happened) as if sums up the scrupulous observations of the most diverse aspects of human activity and the life of society.
Detective Malcolm Ainslie, a former Catholic priest, is investigating a series of murders that have taken place in Miami and surrounding cities. Hard work bears fruit — the culprit is identified, brought to justice and sentenced to death.
This is where the story begins.
“At ten thirty-five pm on January twenty-seventh, Malcolm Ainslie was halfway out of the homicide department when he heard the phone call behind him. By pure instinct, Malcolm paused and looked around.
Later, he had to regret more than once that he did it. «
The context of the «production» of the murder investigation department is written out in detail (as always with Haley): the everyday life of the police station, the work of a detective, prosecutor, forensic research methods, preparation of charges, testimony in court, etc., and so on. In this context, human destinies unfold and intertwine, covering all strata of society and a wide range of life aspirations … And the boundaries separating truth from lies, passion from duty, vice from virtue, are becoming increasingly blurred.
The novel is published without cuts in Russian for the first time.
