A novel by a remarkable Russian writer, satirist, publicist M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1828 — 1889) is the story of one landowner’s family. Difficult relationships between «favorites» and «hateful» are shown with deep psychology and subtle humor.
“From Pogorelka, messengers came to Judushka, at first rarely, then more often and more often. Either the gingerbreads were not born in Pogorelka, now the cucumbers came out with spots from the rains, then the turkeys, according to the present free time, were overcame, “yes, dear friend, you would order carp in Dubrovin to fish, in which the deceased son Pavel never refused to old woman’s mother “. Judas frowned, but did not dare to openly express displeasure. He felt sorry for the crucian carp, but most of all he was afraid that his mother would curse him. He remembered how she once said: I will come to Golovlevo, I will order to open a church, I will call the priest and shout: «I curse!» — and this recollection stopped him from many dirty tricks for which he was a great master.
