The most famous work of Niccolo Machiavelli was the treatise «The Emperor», originally published in Russia under the names «Prince» and «Ruler». Machiavelli created the doctrine of a consistently secular state, free from ecclesiastical morality. He believed that in the struggle to strengthen the state, any means are permissible: violence, deception, betrayal. The term «Machiavellianism» that appeared later began to denote a policy that disregards the laws of morality.
Machiavelli wrote: «It should be understood that a sovereign, especially a new one, cannot do everything for which people are considered good, since for the sake of preserving the state he is often forced to go against his word, against mercy, kindness and piety.»
In 1559, the Catholic Church added Machiavelli’s work to the list of prohibited books.
