The publication contains the story of the great Russian writer Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1828-1910).
The work is included in the programs of grades 5-11 of secondary schools of all levels of education, for classroom and homework.
That very night, from the forward fortress of Vozdvizhenskaya, fifteen miles from the aul in which Hadji Murad spent the night, three soldiers with a non-commissioned officer left the fortification behind the Chakhgirinskaya gate. The soldiers were in sheepskin coats and hats, with overcoats rolled over their shoulders and large boots above the knee, as Caucasian soldiers walked then. Soldiers with rifles on their shoulders walked first along the road, then, having walked five hundred paces, turned off it and, rustling their boots on dry leaves, walked twenty paces to the right and stopped at a broken plane tree, the black trunk of which could be seen even in the darkness. A secret was usually sent to this plane tree.
