The author of this book, Eric Berne (1910-1970), is one of the most prominent psychologists and psychiatrists of the twentieth century. He created an “interaction analysis” that studies the behavior of a person in his immediate environment — in a family, a group of employees or an organization. On this analysis, he founded an effective method of group therapy, which is now used throughout the world. Dr. Berne’s most important discovery consists in the structural description of the layers of the human psyche, which he called, in his simple and expressive language, Parent, Adult and Child. The proposed book, first translated into Russian in full, without cuts and distortions, not only tells about the pathology of communication, but also explains how to deal with it. Unlike physical disabilities, communication diseases are generally curable. For each game, the author gives its «antithesis», a technique that destroys the game and frees communication from this parasitic layer. Of course, this is best done by a psychotherapist; the book was originally intended for psychotherapists, but thanks to its accessible presentation, it spread to the general public and became a bestseller in the United States, which is rarely the case with scientific books.
The personality of Abram Ilyich Fet (1924-2007) is unique for our time; such were probably encountered during the Renaissance, the French Enlightenment of the 18th century, or among the Russian intelligentsia of the 19th century. Perhaps he was one of the last representatives of this «endangered species».
He defended his Ph.D. thesis in mathematics at Moscow University when he was barely 24 years old. The dissertation was recognized as outstanding. He defended his doctoral degree in the same place. Until now, no one has improved the scientific results contained in it. The breadth and depth of AI Fet’s intellectual and scientific interests are completely unusual for our era. Among the natural sciences, in addition to mathematics and physics, biology was especially close to him. He had a deep knowledge of the humanities, including not only history and philosophy, sociology and psychology, but also literature and art. Abram Ilyich read fluently in seven European languages. His reading circle was enormous, and he accurately determined the true meaning of each book. Those that he considered especially important were translated for Samizdat, which was especially important under a totalitarian system of power and strict censorship. It was he who first introduced the Russian reader to the main works of Konrad Lorenz, Eric Bern, Eric Fromm and many others.
