The second movement of the world-famous four-volume «Neapolitan Quartet» continues the story of Lenu´ Greco and Lila Cerullo. Friends grow up, their paths in life diverge inexorably. They still strive to escape from the squalor and poverty of the Neapolitan outskirts, but each chooses its own path. Impulsive Leela becomes Signora Carracci; wealth and a new name make her renounce who she was yesterday, leave in the past a daring talented girl who showed great promise. Lenu continues to study, trying to prove to herself that she can achieve success without her brilliant girlfriend.
The stuffy backyards of Naples, full of entertainment Ischia, the university Pisa … in different scenery life will more than once test the strength of the friendship between Leela and Lena, and they will again and again be convinced that the thread that bound them in childhood could not break any of them …
Reviews:
“In our youth, we all have a best friend who can be trusted with any secret. But growing up, we part with her — and with that part of ourselves that she embodied. The feelings of the one who abandons a friend and the one who is abandoned by a friend is rarely spoken about in literature. Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan cycle fills this gap — overwhelming the reader. Never before in a book have I come across such a truthful reflection of a very lifelong female friendship. «
The New York Times Style Magazine
The Neapolitan Quartet is one of the most powerful works of art of the entire post-war period. «
The chicago tribune
“The depth of the author’s understanding of the characters and psychological states of the heroines is amazing. Ferrante’s novels are life itself! «
