The hero of «Casus Kukotsky» is a genius doctor, what is called, by the grace of God, and this opens up great novel opportunities for the author, because a person of this profession looks into the abyss every day: the border between health and ill health is the same border between life and death, freedom and lack of freedom.
The time of action in the novel is the forties and sixties: the end of the Stalinist era, the defeat of genetics, the death of a tyrant, the thaw, the first jazzmen. Physicality and, it would seem, the crudest physiology (here the author is not afraid to go to the very edge) are closely intertwined with the theme of fate — in its lofty, almost ancient Greek understanding.
