The first essay of London «Typhoon off the coast of Japan», for which he received the first prize of a newspaper in San Francisco, was published on November 12, 1893 and marked the beginning of his literary career. In the spring of 1897, Jack London succumbed to the «gold rush» and left for Alaska. He returned to San Francisco in 1898, experiencing all the delights of a northern winter. Instead of gold, fate endowed Jack London with meetings with the future heroes of his works.
