Literary scholars and critics assess Shalamov’s Kolyma Tales as documentary historical evidence that captures the great catastrophe of mankind in the 20th century. In his stories, Shalamov goes beyond simply describing all the nightmares of the Soviet Gulag. He is not trying to instill fear in his readers. He does not call fear by name. He just blocks it. But, reading or listening to Shalamov’s works, literally with your skin you feel all the horror and suffering contained in them. “Kolyma stories” are amazing, they require not only empathy, but also a reassessment of one’s own life, a certain moral conclusion.
