I remember when I read it as a child, I was terribly disappointed. Before me was some kind of heavy dark dream, and a very Victorian dream at that. And only having lived up to the Carroll years, to the age at which he improvised this tale, I began to understand how great pressure, difficult experiences and what courageous spirit it was dictated.
This is a tale of a very sad, very hunted lonely person. And, I think, the child understands it. And together with your parents, you can scoff at how a deck of cards is trying to control human life.
In any case, «Alice in Wonderland» is one of the few books that can bring adults and children together.
