I am often asked: where can I see the paintings of Vera Shcheglova? I don’t know what to answer, I’m afraid to upset the readers, indicating with the answer the disembodied heroine of my novel. I hide the fact that I listened to the famous jazz composition that gave the name to the title of the book only recently and was surprised at the insignificant impression it made on me.
If you think about it, then my hometown, which is so poignantly real in the novel dedicated to it, is no longer in the world; there is another who has nothing to do with me. So what the hell is real? Is it really just the sunlight that flooded its streets, our childhood and youth, our love; our whole life …
