Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a crude and devastatingly honest portrayal of the line between sanity and insanity.
Like the many high-profile events associated with the name of the «jolly prankster» Ken Kesey, the publication in 1962 of his first book «Over the Cuckoo’s Nest» made a lot of noise in the literary life of America. After her appearance, Kesey was recognized as the most talented writer, and the novel itself became one of the main works of the beatnik and hippie movements.
Debut work, written at the age of 27, during the period when the author took part in psychological state experiments to change human consciousness. The novel was one of the required homework assignments in literature courses at Stanford University.
In 1963, a theatrical production was staged, and in 1975 Milos Forman shot the film of the same name, which conquered the whole world and won five Oscars, and also staged many performances in different countries, including Russia.
The film received 5 Academy Awards, as well as 11 nominations and 28 other awards.
“He knows: you have to laugh at what torments you, otherwise you will not keep your balance, otherwise the world will drive you crazy. He knows life has a torturous side. <…>but does not let the pain overshadow the comedy, just as comedy does not let the pain overshadow. «
