Tender Night (1934) is a lyrical, elegant and realistically powerful portrayal of the life of a married couple: a psychiatrist and his patient, who became his wife. The main character, Dr. Dick Diver, is talented, promising and charming, but weak, does not stand the test of wealth. A hedonistic life without special interests and deeds, casual hobbies, wasting of intellect in empty companies at resorts — all this leads to moral and professional degradation. The tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of the luxurious French Riviera, where mannered and jaded representatives of the aristocratic society play with life. The light and graceful style of the novel hides a deep inner drama and hopelessness of the situation described.
