One of the earliest and most striking novels by Viktor Pelevin «Omon Ra» is a parody of educational and patriotic works of the Soviet era and reveals many allusions, both to the history of astronautics and to the system of priorities and values of Soviet society. The plot of the novel is based on the preparation of Soviet cosmonauts for the flight to the moon. According to Viktor Pelevin himself, the book uses the allegorical idea of »tonal», which symbolically denotes a totalitarian command-administrative false-propaganda communist society of self-sacrifice. The book is dedicated to the «Heroes of Soviet Space» — but not widely celebrated official cosmonauts, but to the unknown rank and file of the classified «Soviet space».
