The Phantom of the Opera is a gothic novel by Gaston Leroux, which was first published in parts in the newspaper Le Golois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910, and later was published as a separate novel. Leroux was inspired by the newly built opera house in Paris, which is still one of the most famous theaters in the world.
In the Paris Opera House, strange phenomena occur: decorations, chandeliers fall, unusual sounds are heard, things disappear, accidents occur. There are rumors about a ghost living in the theater, which some workers even saw (which, by the way, does not prevent them from describing it in very different ways). However, the new directors are very skeptical. They do not follow the advice of the previous management, as a result of which, in particular, they mysteriously lose a very significant amount of money.
Meanwhile, the theater is staging the opera «Faust» …
