«We get bored … Well, boredom is a good cure for fear.»
Manderly family estate. Loved and hated. A young companion of a capricious elderly American woman meets an English aristocrat, tormented by a secret sadness, and … No, this is not another Gothic love story. Not even because it is about growing up, about a crisis of identity, about loneliness and the loss of life goals, about maturity and depravity; suspense icon, psychological thriller, Hitchcock, etc. You can draw endless analogies of what “Rebecca” is like and discover the extent of its impact on the culture of the twentieth century. One thing is clear. “Rebecca” has become a classic not because of the influence exerted (which is indisputable), but because of its originality.
“Rebecca” has a very low threshold of entry. However, no one leaves the walls of the gloomy mansion voluntarily and, of course, no one leaves deprived.
And yes. It’s a very English novel.
