An outstanding surgeon, Professor Preobrazhensky, with the support and direct participation of his faithful assistant, Dr. Bormental, performs a unique operation to transplant the human pituitary gland and testes to a stray dog Sharik. The result turns out to be overwhelming, the dog begins to take on a human form, but along with it, the bad character traits of the donor of transplanted organs Klim Chugunkin are manifested.
The story «Heart of a Dog» with the subtitle «A Monstrous Story» was intended for the almanac «Nedra», where «The Devil’s Day» and «Fatal Eggs» were previously published. Nedr editor N. S. Angarsky hurried Bulgakov with the creation of «Dog’s Heart», hoping that it would have no less success than «Fatal Eggs». But, during Bulgakov’s life, the story, unfortunately, was never published.
