Mikael Niemi’s Boil the Bear is one of the best novels of the year, an action-packed, authentic Swedish retro-detective.
Summer 1852, a remote village in the very north of Sweden. The main characters of this incredible detective story are Pastor Lestadius and Jussi, a Sami boy he found in the forest. Their measured life with conversations, forest walks, hobby for botany suddenly turns the murder. The heroes have to join forces to conduct their own investigation, which turns into a real struggle between Light and Darkness.
A fascinating detective intrigue is built into an equally fascinating historical novel, and all this is served with a warm, slightly ironic intonation. It is also interesting that Lars Levi Lestadius is a real historical person, a man who spent his whole life among the Sami and, in fact, converted them to Christianity.
Press about the book:
“For Niemi, all deviations from the detective canon do not at all look like weaknesses or shortcomings — on the contrary, they add warmth, authenticity and charm to his novel. The detective story is an artificial genre by its nature, while Boil the Bear is the most natural, natural book, utterly alien to any predetermined expectations and market standards. «

Boil a Bear is more than a historical novel and a detective story, it is beautifully written prose that brings together several complex themes. Bright and convincing heroes of Mikael Niemi will occupy your thoughts for a long time.
Swedish Book Review
“Divine detective. Legendary Pastor Lestadius turns to Sherlock Holmes in this extraordinary historical mystery novel. Niemi creates images, smells, sounds, atmospheres and characters, and his book is truly extraordinary reading. «
Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet
«Boil a Bear» is an irresistible novel, it gives an almost physically tangible and ruthless image of an era that seems to be left behind a long time ago, but it disturbs it as if we are inside it. This novel is a huge literary achievement. »
