Adopting America is perhaps one of Ann Tyler’s warmest novels. This is a story about what it means to be American. Two families who would never have met in ordinary life collide at the airport: the Native American Donaldsons and the Iranian-born Yazdan couple. Both couples await the arrival of the baby girls they have adopted from Korea. The children arrive and the adults decide to celebrate their first anniversary together. From that day on, families meet, get closer, and gradually their fates are intertwined.
The novel is full of light, tenderness, amazing observations of life. A story told from two points of view — people who were born and raised in the country, and people who came to it and are trying to become their own here.
Press about the book:
Tyler’s books always have a guiding light to keep you from getting lost.
Lisa Birger
A very touching, humorous story about friendship and family.
Library Journal
The appearance of each new novel by Ann Tyler is like the visit of an old good friend. But Adopting America is a special book. In her 17th novel, Tyler appeared a little different, she brought something very fresh to the book, while retaining everything that we love her for.
Washington Post Book
Tyler describes the clash of cultures, not forgetting about his main theme — the drama of family life. A very touching book full of humor.
