«War and Peace» is one of the highest achievements of artistic genius
L.N. Tolstoy. The book demanded tremendous efforts from the writer. In 1869, in the drafts of the Epilogue, Tolstoy recalled the “painful and joyful perseverance and excitement” with which he had worked for seven years. These were the years of «incessant» — in his own words — and exceptional work under the best living conditions. »
In an outline for the preface to War and Peace, Tolstoy wrote that in 1856 he began to write a novel, “the hero of which was supposed to be a Decembrist returning with his family to Russia. Unwittingly, I passed from the present to 1825 … But even in 1825 my hero was already a mature, family man. To understand him, I had to travel back to his youth, and his youth coincided with … the epoch of 1812 … failures and defeats … ”So Tolstoy gradually came to the need to begin the story from 1805.
The novel War and Peace was a great success. An excerpt from the novel entitled «Year 1805» appeared in the «Russian Bulletin» in 1865. In 1868, three parts of it came out, which were soon followed by the other two (four volumes in total).
