About the product This book is an author’s project of the remarkable artist Mikhail Bychkov, in whose illustrations episodes of Pushkin’s poem and Pushkin’s Petersburg literally come to life. «I did not set myself the task of illustrating The Bronze Horseman. I wanted to create a pictorial equivalent of the poem — complex, multilevel, like herself.» The poem «The Bronze Horseman», one of the most profound and perfect works of A.S. Pushkin, written in Boldino in October 1833. It depicts a large-scale flood in St. Petersburg on November 7, 1824. Calling his work a «Petersburg story», Pushkin opened the theme of the big city in Russian literature. The tragic event, which broke the usual course of life, turns into a real phantasmagoria, a pattern associated with the special fate of St. Petersburg in Russian history and culture. During the poet’s lifetime, only the beginning of The Bronze Horseman was published: the «highest censor» Nicholas I demanded changes to the poem, which Pushkin did not agree to.
